Due to intensive agriculture and the increasing demand for food the planet is losing billions of tones of productive soil each year. Bristol startup LettUs Grow has an aim to reduce the waste and carbon footprint of fresh produce by encouraging vertical urban farming, which would allow food to be grown near its point of consumption. LettUs Grow recognised that in order to tackle this problem a fresh look at farming was needed and this is how they came up with the indoor farming solution.

Member Case Study | TOKA: Transforming surgical procedures through tech

TOKA® is a collaborative project led by Alberto Casonato of 3D Metal Printing (residential member at the SETsquared Bath Innovation Centre), Professor Richie Gill and researcher Alisdair McLeod from the Centre of Orthopaedic Biomechanics (University of Bath), and consultant orthopaedic surgeons Andrew Toms and Vipul Mandalia from Exeter’s Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre.

With the help of the SETsquared Business Acceleration Programme, through SETsquared Bath the project has so far secured nearly £1 million from investment partners and a public grant to run the UK first insilico trial to evaluate the ground-breaking technique without a single patient intervention.

Graduate Acceleration Showcase | The brightest graduate start-ups in tech

The event, organised by SETsquared and hosted by Deloitte, saw 19 of the brightest graduate tech start-ups from the universities of Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Southampton and Surrey – many with a sustainability focus – pitch their innovative business ideas to more than 100 high-profile investors, mentors and entrepreneurs. Out of the nineteen companies to make it through to the event, nine of these were University of Bath graduates and centre members!

STBAH event round up | Keeping products and materials in use

On Thursday 27th June, the Sustainable Technologies Business Acceleration Hub (STBAH) programme held their second event in their series of sustainable economy events.

The breakfast meeting took place at the Engine Shed in Bristol and saw a number of delegates attend the event which topic was focused on Keeping Products and Materials in Use.

Dr Sophie Parsons, Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Bath opened the event with her keynote on “the role of materials in our transition to a low carbon economy”.

Minister unveils plaque at new IAAPS automotive research facility

IAAPS will be a global centre of excellence, delivering transformational research and innovation and supporting the automotive industries in meeting future air quality standards. It will lead the development of future generations of ultra-low emission vehicles and attract sector-related businesses to the region, generating economic growth.

At the invitation of the University’s Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Ian White, and Chair of Council, Mrs Pam Chesters CBE, Chris Skidmore MP formally unveiled a commemorative plaque which will be incorporated into the finished IAAPS building.

This month we held our annual summer showcase at Walcot Cafe in Bath and it was a lively and celebratory affair. We even rolled out the red carpet for our guests and enjoyed prosecco and delicious canapés throughout the evening.
