Member News | University awarded new KTP with 3D Metal Printing

3DMP’s flagship product (TOKA), is a patient specific solution for a form of knee preserving surgery known as High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO).

Currently TOKA offers device personalisation based on individual patient anatomy, matching their geometry (shape). However, 3DMP want to increase this personalisation by also meeting the individual biomechanical loading requirements. Following discussions with orthopaedic surgeons, this has been identified as the optimal way to provide individualised treatment.

Congratulations as winners announced at the STBAH end of programme event

Find out who the winners were at the Sustainable Technologies Business Acceleration Hub end of programme awards ceremony!

Open to a public vote there were five awards up for grabs with winners each receiving a plot of land from Co-forest, a local carbon offsetting forest planting organisation. These prizes signified the lasting legacy of the three year programme where real change for good has been made and will continue to do so.

Member News | Neuro join prestigious Y Combinator accelerator

SETsquared Bath member Neuro, a start-up founded by University of Bath graduates Paul Hetherington and Oscar Rovira has been awarded a place on the highly competitive US based Y Combinator accelerator.

In 2019, Paul Hetherington was awarded a place on the University of Bath Alumni Innovation Award scheme where he was funded and supported by the University and SETsquared for a year to start the business.

Member News | Spherics wins coveted net-zero award from Tech Nation

The Rising Stars competition is the only national tech scaleup competition in the UK, designed to showcase the most exciting companies at Seed to pre-Series A investment stage. The winners have been selected through a rigorous competition process, with more than 330 applications received. Expert judges selected 10 ‘Rising Stars’ and 2 winners for specific award categories - environmental and diversity.

Spherics dazzled the judges and went on to be chosen as the national winner of the ‘Rising Star Net-Zero’ award. The accolade recognises the best net zero company in the competition and the category represents the best of climate tech. Congratulations to George and the team!

STBAH | Successes to be showcased at end of programme virtual awards ceremony

STBAH was the UK’s first business acceleration hub dedicated to help set up and grow a new generation of innovative small firms in the sustainable technologies sector. This pioneering hub has helped to underpin the reputation of the West of England as both a magnet for sustainable and low carbon businesses and as a centre for innovation.

To mark the end of the programme STBAH are hosting a showcase and awards event. All those who participated in the programme, as well as key-stakeholders will be invited to the event, where key successes will be highlighted, signposting for future business acceleration support and award winners will be announced.

Bath students crowned runner up in NatWest 10k challenge

Back in January we shared the news that two students from our University of Bath Entrepreneurship Programme had made it through to the final of the NatWest 10k pitching challenge! The challenge started back in November 2020 as part of the NatWest Business Builder programme which is available to anyone starting a business.

We are extremely pleased to announce that James Russ and co-founder Andrei Petrus, Mechanical Engineering with Integrated Design Engineering - Researching Biomedical Infomatics at the University of Bath were the runners up in the competition with their start up business, Testmyteeth.

Here at SETsquared Bath we find ourselves predominantly surrounded my men. It’s known that there are less female entrepreneurs and women business owners in general but when you add technology, digital innovation and engineering to the mix we know we need to do more to encourage, engage, support and celebrate the women in our industry. We work hard with the University of Bath to encourage more female students to embark on entrepreneurial journeys whilst studying and listen to our female students to learn more about their needs to be able to shatter more glass ceilings in male dominated industries.

The new £2M Digital Skills Investment Programme is a key part of West of England Combined Authority’s Recovery Plan. The programme will support:

Two UoB students through to the final of NatWest Business pitching competition

In celebration of Global Entrepreneur Week last November, NatWest Business launched a new competition #GEW10K where they showed new businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs how to write a 60-second pitch, with the chance to take home £10,000!

Hundreds of people took part and entered their 60 second pitches so we’re delighted to find out that two of our students have made it through to the final!

Advanced Engineering Digital Innovation business support programme extended

Since the programme launched we have been supporting a number of enterprises, across the sectors, with 140 businesses having already completed the support programme and many more participating. The support is bespoke and can be in the form of business mentoring, some of these companies have received financial support and some we are working with on research projects through the University of Bath - enabling some of these enterprises to bring new products to market.
