Iksuda Therapeutics raises $47 million in latest funding round to support the development of a new generation of therapeutics for the treatment of cancer.

Iksuda Therapeutics was spun out from the University of Bath in 2007, originally under the name Glythera Ltd, based on technologies created in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology to develop antibody-based therapies for the treatment of cancer.

DBAH Case Study | Earswitch Ltd

The Earswitch was developed by a UK GP (Primary care doctor) to help people with severe communication problems to activate virtual keyboards to allow them them to communicate.

The support Earswitch received through the Digital Innovation Business Acceleration Hub was pivotal for the business and product development. DBAH facilitated contacts with enthusiastic and interested academics at the University of Bath, who’s fields overlapped with The Earswitch. This allowed early discussions and support, and pilot surveys, prior to formal grant funding, and also provided support & input with formulating the NIHR i4i Grant application.

DBAH also facilitated engagement with the SETsquared Scale-up Programme, that funded a bid writer for each of the 2 stages of the i4i application.

Congratulations to SETsquared Bath member, The Washing Machine Project who has announced that it has secured a three-year fundraising commitment from Electrocomponents plc.

The essential funding will enable the deployment of at least 7,500 washing machines in 10 countries, to positively impact 100,000 people. Electrocomponents’ support will extend to encouraging its employees, customers and suppliers to contribute through fundraising and volunteering activities.

Businesses supported by the University of Bath have raised £25.5m investment despite the global pandemic

SETsquared has released data which shows that companies supported by University of Bath including SETsquared Bath, have raised £25.5m worth of investment from private and public sources in 2020. This is also reflected in the national picture whereby companies in the SETsquared Partnership ecosystem raised a record level of investment totalling £616m in 2020, which represents a 40% increase on 2019.

Member News | University awarded new KTP with 3D Metal Printing

3DMP’s flagship product (TOKA), is a patient specific solution for a form of knee preserving surgery known as High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO).

Currently TOKA offers device personalisation based on individual patient anatomy, matching their geometry (shape). However, 3DMP want to increase this personalisation by also meeting the individual biomechanical loading requirements. Following discussions with orthopaedic surgeons, this has been identified as the optimal way to provide individualised treatment.

Congratulations as winners announced at the STBAH end of programme event

Open to a public vote there were five awards up for grabs with winners each receiving a plot of land from Co-forest, a local carbon offsetting forest planting organisation. The Rising Stars competition is the only national tech scaleup competition in the UK, designed to showcase the most exciting companies at Seed to pre-Series A investment stage. The winners have been selected through a rigorous competition process, with more than 330 applications received. Expert judges selected 10 ‘Rising Stars’ and 2 winners for specific award categories - environmental and diversity.

Spherics dazzled the judges and went on to be chosen as the national winner of the ‘Rising Star Net-Zero’ award. The accolade recognises the best net zero company in the competition and the category represents the best of climate tech. Congratulations to George and the team!

STBAH was the UK’s first business acceleration hub dedicated to help set up and grow a new generation of innovative small firms in the sustainable technologies sector. This pioneering hub has helped to underpin the reputation of the West of England as both a magnet for sustainable and low carbon businesses and as a centre for innovation.

Bath students crowned runner up in NatWest 10k challenge

Back in January we shared the news that two students from our University of Bath Entrepreneurship Programme had made it through to the final of the NatWest 10k pitching challenge! The challenge started back in November 2020 as part of the NatWest Business Builder programme which is available to anyone starting a business.

We are extremely pleased to announce that James Russ and co-founder Andrei Petrus, Mechanical Engineering with Integrated Design Engineering - Researching Biomedical Infomatics at the University of Bath were the runners up in the competition with their start up business, Testmyteeth.

In celebration of Global Entrepreneur Week last November, NatWest Business launched a new competition #GEW10K where they showed new businesses, start-ups and entrepreneurs how to write a 60-second pitch, with the chance to take home £10,000!
